A Brief History of XRay
Wlhelm Conrad Roentgen received Nobel Prize in 1901
Steps in the Development of XRay
1913 – William David Coolidge invents thermionic emission tube
1937 – First practical rotating anode tubes were manufactured
1971 – Computed Tomography (CT) scanning was introduced into medical practice by Godfrey Hounsfield who developed the technology at EMI central research laboratories.
Pioneers in the Development of XRay
Sir William Morgan (1785) was the first man to produce x-rays.
Michael Faraday (1821) – conducted his first experiments on electrical discharge in a partially evacuated glass vessel. He discovered that the ‘voltaic arc’ was accompanied by the florescence of gas– he called ‘radiant matter’.
Julius Plucker (1850) – First to observe Green Glass Flouresence in partially evacuated discharge tubes.
Wilhelm Hittorf (1870) – discovered florescent discharge, he termed ‘cathode rays’.
Philipp Lenard proposed ‘inverse square law’.
Joseph John Thomson discovered electron – 1896
1906 – Charles Barkla discovered that x-rays could be scattered by gases
In 1913, William David Coolidge revolutionized the field of radiology by inventing what is now referred to as the Coolidge X-ray tube.
